This is a blog created for Alexis Hakalmazian. On June 28, 2006 she was diagnosed with leukemia (AML). She endured 4 rounds of chemotherapy at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, TX before heading home in mid-November. She is truly an encouragement to all of us.

Hi Alexis,
Your grandfather, Rich, is my friend and co-worker.
My youngest daughter, Brittany, is 15 years old. She also loves volleyball. It's her life. She's a leukemia survivor. She's one of the strongest people I know. I've always attributed that to the fact that she survived such a terrible ordeal.
It's great to see your smiling face in the photos on the website. With the help of God, you will fight your way through this and afterward you'll be unstoppable. You'll know there's nothing you can't accomplish.
God bless you Alexis. You'll never know how many of us there are out here praying for you, but it's a lot!
Mary

Hi Alexis,
I am best friends with your great aunt Lorraine. She just sent me this web page and I thought I would let you know that you will be in our continued thoughts and most of all prayers. God does hear and answer prayers and I know that for a fact. I have had 3 times around with cancer and am still fighting. God does answer prayers.
My daughter who is now 32 was a soccer champ and got a scholarship to Northern Colorado Univ.
Many hugs and prayers from your friends in Arizona.

Hi Alexis,
This is your Great Aunt Lorraine, sending you hugs, kisses, and prayers.
You've been in my thoughts and prayers daily since grandma told me the news. (You might be hearing from a few of my friends too.)
Keep smilin' sweetheart - all WILL be WELL and you'll be back to volleyball in no time.
Love your blue jammies.
Much Love,
Great Aunt Lorraine

Dear Alexis -
You've been in my prayers since your grandpa Rich left the office last week and headed to Texas to be near you. You'll remain in my daily prayers until you completed these treatments and are once again moving forward with all the wonders of teenage life. As a cancer survivor having gone through a year's worth of chemo and radiation, I am a firm believer in the power of prayer. Prayer works! Prayer, a positive attitude and a stubborn determination to lick this challenge that you currently face will make a huge difference in your outcome. And as Mary said, after this there will be nothing you can’t accomplish! Really!
As I gaze at that smile of yours, I realize that you have your grandfather’s smile. Okay, I didn’t mean to say that you actually LOOK like him … that might be a little bit depressing! (ha-ha!) But you have his smile, and I can only assume that you have also inherited his sense of humor. Having a good sense of humor and keeping that smile on your face and in your heart will help you through the days ahead too – it just seems to lighten the load.
God bless you Alexis! You have no idea how many people are cheering for your recovery!
Lorie

Hi Alexis,
I am a Loyola friend of your great aunt Lorraine. She has helped me through so many personal problems with her friendship and prayers, and so I am happy to include you in the list of people that I pray for every day.
I have a daughter who is 24 and a son who is 23. My children are two of the best things in my life, and while we have never gone through what you are facing, we have faced other challenges together and become even stronger because of the struggles. My son has Attention Deficit Disorder and a mathlearning disability similar to dyslexia. Although his grade school and high school years were difficult ones academically, he recently graduated from Loyola with honors! His college success was all the sweeter because he overcame obstacles no one thought he could, and he accomplished them through the combined family efforts of prayer, hard work, and his own stubborness and determination to prove to everyone that he COULD succeed.
All this is to say that it seems that you have a great and supportive team of doctors and nurses, family and friends (even those you have never and probably WILL never meet), and all of this, combined with faith in God and your own determination to overcome your illness, can make miracles happen. Let them all support you in any way they can, be open to God's ability to act in your life and be prepared to see how He will bless you.
With many prayers for your recovery,
Jackie Ciombor

Hi Alexis. I have to say you have a very pretty name but of course I say this with prejudice as I also have a niece named Alexis.
I am a close friend of your Aunt Lorraine and believe me, as long as you have her in your corner everything will be all right.
Almost two years ago I was diagnosed with Lymphoma with a very rare classification. I hesitated going through treatments, but your Aunt being herself, she pushed me to have them. And I have been in remission for a little over a year now after 8 months of treatment So you see, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Just hang in there and keep being the lovely young lady your Aunt has told me you are and soon you will be back to doing all the stuff you love.
Bless you and your family.

Hi Alexis...
Sorry for not writing sooner, but I did want to let you know that Tom and I have been praying for you non-stop since we heard the news. We love you so much, and understand what you are going through.
When Tom was diagnosed, we thought the world was coming to an end, but as I'm sure you have heard he is actually doing better than ever! We know that you also will be better than ever because your faith is great and you are so loved. The following is a prayer that I have said daily for years, and I hope that you will be as comforted by it as I have.
Do not look forward to the changes and chances of this life in fear; rather look to them with full hope that as they arise God whose you are will deliver you out of them. He has kept you to this moment--do you but hold fast of his dear hand and he will lead you safely through all things and when you cannot stand he will bear you in his arms. Frances de Sales
Love to you, Danny, Julie and Brock, you are in our prayers!

Hey Lex! Sorry we have not been to see you yet, but plan to come by this week. We have been out of town since we heard about your illness.
We definately mised you this year at baseball games. You are such a bright and bubbly personality. All of us are in your fan club. (Plus we love the chocolate cookies.)
I have been reading the comments from all of your friends and loved ones. You have so many people praying for you - including us. I know that is the thing that will get you through this. You are so incredibly strong and confident - I think one of your friend's said it best when she said God knew you could get through this. In Joshua 1, the Lord promises that he will never leave us or forsake us. He is the healer. I pray for you to rest in that promise and have peace in it.
We will see you soon.

Hallo Alexis,
your godmother (a very good friend of mine) called me yesterday and shared your story.
I also know your grandparents and your grandfather refers to me as "Colonel Klink". You may want to ask him about it.
I cannot comprehend or even imagine that such a young person just barely entering life and adulthood has to experience such a tragedy. I am convinced that with your strong will and determination that you will be able to overcome this.
I will stay and keep informed about your progress and whatever you do "Don't ever give up".
My prayers are with you!

Here are some Maxine- isms...share them with your girlfriends! (and Razzle Dazzle your Grandfather)
I'm ready to listen ... are you ready to think?
I hear you've changed at last...what did you do with the diaper?
Don't let your mind wander...it's too small to be left out on its own!
Everyone seem normal..until you get to know them!
Did you eat an extra bowl of stupid this morning?
I don't know what your problem is but I bet it is hard to pronounce!
I'm busy now can I ignore you some other time!
Life is to short to dance with an ugly man!!
Never go to bed angry stay up and plot your revenge!
Shhhh...is the sound of nobody caring what you think!
If you have something to say raise your hand and place
it over your mouth!
Before you came along we were hungry...now we're fed up!
You're not yourself today...I noticed the improvment already!!
I hope you enjoy them and they give you a giggle or 2!

Hi Alexis,
You may remember meeting us at the Burchfields or at ballgames last summer. We are Jana Burchfield's parents. We certainly remember an outstanding young lady and were so sorry to hear that you dealing with leukemia. From all we've heard, you are continuing to be the wonderful role model that you have always been for kids like Courtney and Ryan. Your smile says so much about your approach to this difficult situation.
Your positive attitude and the prayers of many people around the country will be keys to winning this battle. Steve and I, as well as others in Derby, Kansas are remembering you and your family in our prayers every day.
God bless you all.

Glad to hear you are eating the breakfast, lunch and dinner of champions, taco and burgers! I bet your Dad might even agree with me. Keep on chowing down, babe, it's your (serious now) ticket to strength and getting outta there! I would be willing to bet that in the top ten things you can do to truly help yourself to fight, fight, fight is chowing down (everything and anything, a few vitamins probably wouldn't hurt!) and laughing! If I'm lyin I'm dyin! (that's it laugh it up there , kiddo! I would too if I had to read some of the stuff I have written you!)

A good friend of mine, Bill Cunningham, works with your grandfather Rich. Bill sent your info to some of us at church so we could pray for you! I just checked out your blog though, and you look like you've got tons of friends and family surrounding you - awesome!
I came across a funny little story about a woman going through chemo treatments and thought you might enjoy it. I've pasted it below.
Just wanted to say Hi and let you know that people you don't even know are praying for you. Hang in there - you will get through this!
Helen A.
TODAY'S ATTITUDE
There once was a woman who woke up one morning and looked in the mirror to find only three hairs left on her head. "Well," she said "I think I'll braid my hair today." So she did, and had a wonderful day!
The next day she woke up and looked in the mirror and saw she only had two hairs. "Hmmm" she said, "I think I'll part my hair down the middle." So she did, and had a great day!
The next day she looked in the mirror and noticed she had only one hair left on her head. "Well," she said "Today I'm going to wear my hair in a pony tail." So she did, and had a fun fun day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and noticed there wasn't a single hair on her head. "Yeah!" she exclaimed, "I don't have to fix my hair today!"

Hey, Alexis
your great(?) aunt Kath, here, just checkin in to see how you are doing?
You know, you seem to be going in the opposite direction of Michael Jackson (thank God!) with that new nose of yours! He tried to make his invisible, and you are making yours very much larger, with a "very- red- glow- in- the- dark !" color. Well I guess it beats body piercing!
And considering the Hakalmazian "Credo" is of course; "why be normal?!?" when you can be like us....I guess your new nose is you being "OUR KIND OF NORMAL". And now it all seems so right and logical! ( sorry about that "Grandfather Hakalmazian Twin" thingy! I get carried away sometimes!)
Laugh, Eat, Feel Better, 'cause Jesus Loves You, and so do we!

Hey, Alexis, here is a little humor for ya!
ONE-LINERS part 1:
Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines
I'm not cheap, but I am on special this week
I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol
I intend to live forever - so far, so good
If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her friends?

When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.

Here is a little "humor" for you when you wake up or even if you can't sleep!
JOKES FOR ALEXIS
Definitions that have a completely different meaning to the "OLDER" sibling in a family...
FEEDBACK: the inevitable result when a baby doesn't appreciate the strained carrots.
FULL NAME: what you're called when you're parents are mad at you
GRANDPARENTS: people who think THEIR Grand Kids are wonderful even though they're sure they're kids are not raising them right.
HEARSAY: what toddlers do when anyone mutters a dirty word.
INDEPENDENT: how Parents want you to be as long as you do everything they say.
LOOK OUT!: what it's too late for your younger sibling to do by the time you scream it.
PUDDLE: a small body of water that your little brother always seems to find when you are watching him!
SHOW OFF: a child who thinks he or she is more talented than your brother or sister.
STOREROOM: the distance required between the supermarket aisles so that the "Little Brats"in shopping carts can't quite reach anything.
TEMPER TANTRUMS: what you sibling gets away with !! But not you!
THUNDERSTORM: a chance to see how many siblings can fit into YOUR bed. Oh bother!
TOP BUNK: where you should never put a little Brother wearing Superman jammies.

Dear Great Niece Hakalmonster,
I am sorry that my "posting" dated 8/5 did not reach you when I wrote it on the day you got to go home for awhile. It probably would have made more sense then.
I was just checking in to see how you were doing. I want to tell you something . That picture of you with that "SPECIAL NOSE" and your expression with your hands turned up and all...well..it just makes me want to "hug you so tight" ? It is that adorable! I think it should be used for a poster to be given to other children with leukemia. It just makes such a terrific statement!! of " OH WELL, WHAT CAN YOU DO ? ! ?" anyway I just love it ! ! As "THEY" say, you are an inspiration to us all! And I mean that with "love and admiration" in my heart !
I hope you have enjoyed some of the crazy humor I have sent you ! And, I'm sorry if some of them were too long!
Well, here's GREAT AUNT Kath HAKALMANIC-Gastler with just a little more humor for ya,
Some Helpful Tips:
1. When you feel terrific, notify your face.
2. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt, but it's the only way to live life completely.
3. Never drive while holding a cup of hot coffee between your knees.
4. Never miss an opportunity to have someone rub your back.
5. Never pick up anything off the floor of a cab.
6. Don't judge people by their relatives.
7. In disagreements, fight fairly, No name calling.
8. Remember everyone you meet is afraid of something, loves something, and has lost something.
9. Talk slow but think quick

To My Greatest Great Niece Ms. Alexis Hakalmonster! I hope you are FEELING WELL today. Just remember we, Jesus, Your Family and all of us,love you if you are feeling like POOP! OR somewhere in the middle , and even when you are feeling terrific. I guess that would be loving you , long wide and continous! Anyway, you know what "they" say...blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah! So keeping that in mind.....Here is some pretty cool HUMOR:
I really do love this country, but...
1. Only in America... can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.
2. Only in America... are there handicap parking places in front of a skating rink.
3. Only in America... do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.
4. Only in America... do people order double cheese burgers, large fries, and a diet coke.
5. Only in America... do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters.
6. Only in America... do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage.
7. Only in America... do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place.
8. Only in America... do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight.
9. Only in America... do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poli' in Latin meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'.
10. Only in America... do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille.

Yo! Greatest Great-Niece Hakalmonster.
I almost forgot to post you some jokes for today! So , now, CHANGE-O-PRESTO: one-liners continued:
If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
When I'm not in my right mind, my left mind gets pretty crowded.
.
Boycott shampoo! Demand the REAL poo!
If you choke a smurf, what color does it turn?
Who is General Failure and why is he reading my hard disk?
Energizer Bunny arrested, charged with battery.
I poured Spot remover on my dog. Now he's gone.
.
I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder.
Shin: a device for finding furniture in the dark.
How do you tell when you run out of invisible ink?
Laughing stock: cattle with a sense of humor.

I hope this "post" finds you still at home(or not)and feeling pretty good!
Well, it's "Joke Time at the Alexis Blog (?) (Web) site"!
Politically incorrect ways to say someone is stupid:
Everyone's entitled to be stupid but you are abusing the privilage! --
The light's on, the door's open, but no one's home --
>She's one sandwich short of a picnic --
A few clowns short of a circus.
A few fries short of a happy meal.
As smart as bait.

Dearest Greatest Great-Niece Hakalmonster, (How's that for a salutation?)
What's shakin, toots'? I hope this post finds you doing ok, fine, great, or better than great. (Please circle the one that fits the best.)
I was in the (internet) neighborhood (wish I was in your neighborhood so I could stop by for an hour or so each day and read you jokes in person!) any....way...
One day my housework-challenged husband decided to wash his sweatshirt. Seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he
shouted to me, "What setting do I use on the washing machine?"
"It depends," I replied. "What does it say on your shirt?"
He yelled back, "University of Oklahoma."
And they say blondes are dumb... _______________________
A little boy opened the big and old family Bible. With fascination, he looked at the old pages as he turned them. Then something fell out of the Bible and he picked up and looked at it closely. It was an old leaf from a tree that has been pressed in between pages. "Momma, look what I found," the boy called out. "What have you got there, dear?"
his mother asked. With astonishment in the young boy's voice he answered, "I think it's Adam's boxers!!!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A man was walking on the beach one day and he found a bottle half buried in the sand. He decided to open it. Inside was a genie. The genie said,? I will grant you three wishes and three wishes only." The man thought about his first wish and decided, I think I want 1 million dollars transferred to a Swiss bank account. POOF!
Next he wished for a Ferrari red in color. POOF! There was the car sitting in front of him. He asked for his final and third wish, " I wish I was irresistible to women." POOF! He turned into a box of chocolates
Hey, Greatest Great-niece Hakalmonster, ya know I just might like your "new do" a little better than your "old do"! Quite liberating, don't ya think?
It truly is great for all of us to see you smiling again! You are phe-nom-en-al!! ( SORRY about the spelling)
Hey, ya know what? I think it's joke time on the "Lex Hakalmonster" BLOG SHOW !
MORE BRILLIANT STUFF FROM COURT:
Q. Did he pick the dog up by the ears?
A. No.
Q. What was he doing with the dog's ears?
A. Picking them up in the air.
Q. Where was the dog at this time?
A. Attached to the ears
Q. When he went, had you gone and had she, if she wanted to and were able for the time being excluding all the restraints on her not to go, gone
also, would he have brought you, meaning you and she, with him to the station?
Mr. Brooks: Objection. That question should be taken out and shot.
Q: Are you qualified to give a urine sample?
A: Yes, I have been since early childhood.
GREAT(?)AUNT HAKALMANIAC!
IT'S TIME FOR jOKES ON THE 'LEX HAKALMONSTER BLOG SHOW"!
Ever Wonder Why...?
Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?
Why women can't put on mascara with their mouth closed?
Why don't you ever see the headline "Psychic Wins Lottery"?
Why is "abbreviated" such a long word?
Why is it that doctors call what they do "practice"?
Why is it that to stop Windows 98, you have to click on "Start"?
Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons?
Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?
Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?
Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food?
When dog food is new and improved tasting, who tests it?
Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?
Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?
You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff?!
Why don't sheep shrink when it rains?
Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?
If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?
If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?
Love and Prayers,
Great(?)-Aunt Hakalmaniac (gastler)
